Tragic irony

Unlike a twist that merely surprises, tragic irony lets the reader see how hope, love, or truth-seeking feeds the trap the character cannot read until it is too late.

Typical usage

Dystopian and political tragedy withhold the easy escape: the ally is the inquisitor, the hiding place is wired, the last private thought belongs to the state.
