Grief

Sadness12 showing techniques

Grief is not linear. Characters can laugh at a funeral and collapse over a coffee cup. Honor the inconsistency.

Craft overview

Grief rewrites a character's daily routine. Ground the loss in the physical adjustments of the setting, show the cognitive friction of everyday tasks, and use unpredictable triggers to shatter their defenses.

Internal experience

A persistent feeling that the physical world is wrongly lit or empty, a state where simple tasks require immense effort, and a vulnerability to unprompted memories.

Showing techniques

Physical Reactions

A heavy, exhausting lethargy throughout the limbs and hands
A complete loss of appetite or a persistent, hollow ache in the stomach
A tight, restricted throat paired with an inability to clear the breath
Severe sleep disruption marked by waking up at a historical routine hour

Dialogue Indicators

Long, uncharacteristic pauses mid-sentence as thoughts drift away
Strictly practical, transactional talk that carefully avoids naming what was lost
A defensive spike of anger or deflection when offered generic comfort
Sudden, hyper-detailed anecdotes about the missing person delivered without warning

Behavioral Indicators

Deliberately avoiding specific rooms, physical thresholds, or meaningful objects
Clutching or touching a small, lingering memento with excessive frequency
Over-functioning by taking on massive hosting, cooking, or cleaning burdens for the team
Neglecting basic self-care routines followed by a sudden wave of internal shame

Full guide

Grief is a non-linear, deeply volatile emotional experience that amateur manuscripts frequently over-simplify. Writing authentic loss means avoiding the predictable timeline of constant crying and uniform sadness. Real characters do not mourn in a straight line; they can laugh hysterically at a funeral, function with flawless logistical efficiency during a crisis, and then completely collapse over a trivial, everyday item like an empty coffee cup or an unwashed coat. Honoring these behavioral contradictions is what gives a scene its devastating human reality.

To write profound loss, focus on how the absence alters the physical blocking of your settings. The environment itself must look and feel wrongly lit to the viewpoint character, with ordinary daily routines demanding an impossible amount of mental effort to initiate. Let memories intrude into the prose without warning, triggered by simple sensory details like a specific smell, a shadow across a chair, or a syntax habit shared by an ally. By tracking the permanent void left in the story, you show that the story can never return to its original shape.
