Element kind: Structure
The creative brilliance of a hard system stems entirely from what it cannot execute. When your characters face high-stakes complications, they must exploit the internal loopholes and strict boundaries of your world rules creatively, ensuring their victories read like complex puzzles rather than arbitrary magic.
A hard system relies entirely on absolute limitation. By clearly mapping out the exact costs, severe physiological taxes, and strict operational boundaries of your world rules to the audience, your worldbuilding ceases to function as a random plot device and transforms into an active canvas for problem-solving.
