Element kind: Character
The best mentors possess their own historical regrets and complex vulnerabilities. Use this figure to challenge your protagonist’s naive assumptions about the world, ensuring their eventual departure forces your main lead to face the central conflict completely naked and unassisted. Typical movements: The Wisdom Threshold, The Skill Impartation, and The Enforced Independence Handoff.
Mentor figures can manifest as trustworthy guides, fallible teachers, or dangerously manipulative forces. Their ultimate exit from your narrative manuscript marks the vital handoff where your protagonist must transition from taught skill to earned personal judgment.
