Pacing craft
An extended backstory sequence drops right as a crisis explodes, completely breaking the tension.
Interrupting an active, high-stakes scene with an extended backstory sequence stalls present-moment narrative tension.
Restrict flashbacks to moments of physical stillness where a character is actively processing a choice
Deliver past history in fragmented, sensory shards rather than full narrative scenes
Ensure the past memory directly changes the specific choice the character makes the second they return to the present day
BeforeAs the assassin lunged across the desk with a dagger, Thomas suddenly remembered the hot summer afternoon when he was eight years old and his father taught him how to parry a wooden sword in the orchards.
AfterThe blade caught Thomas across the forearm before he could clear the desk. He didn't try to parry; he lunged low, using his father's old border-guard trick of driving his weight straight into the attacker's lead knee to shatter the joint.
This specific pacing error occurs when an author interrupts a high-stakes, present-moment conflict to deliver an extended, multi-page childhood memory or backstory sequence. Writers often use this device as a convenient crutch because they are afraid the reader won't empathize with a character's current choices unless they see their formative trauma immediately. However, dropping a passive flashback right as an antagonist draws a weapon or a crisis explodes completely neutralizes the scene's momentum, breaking the physical reality of the setting.
