Worldbuilding craft
The physical setting functions as flat, uninspired wallpaper instead of an active narrative constraint.
Revive an uninspired setting that acts as a flat backdrop by injecting distinct cultural systems, physical constraints, and sensory details.
Anchor every location in a clear constraint, such as a strict law, a scarce resource, or a taboo
Show daily human labor, regional food, or social rituals in plot-relevant ways
Force the setting itself to demand an active choice that the protagonist resists
BeforeThey arrived at the city of Oakhaven, which had tall stone walls, a busy marketplace filled with vendors, and a large castle where the local baron lived.
AfterEvery window in the lower district faced away from the copper smelter to keep the sulfur ash from ruining the linens. In Oakhaven, you didn't judge a citizen's wealth by their clothes; you judged it by how far uphill their front door sat from the yellow smoke of the vents.
Commonly referred to as Cardboard World Syndrome, this flaw occurs when a setting functions as passive wallpaper instead of an active force in the narrative. The locations feel generic, lacking unique cultural taboos, economic frictions, or sensory specifics.
If a fantasy city can be swapped for a generic medieval village or a sci-fi colony without altering a single character choice or scene dynamic, the world-building is failing. A world-class setting should act like an antagonist, imposing strict physical limitations, resource shortages, and social pressures that actively force the protagonist into making difficult choices.
