Pacing craft
Chapters lack structural turns and stretch past their natural dramatic endpoints into logistical text.
Fix structural pacing delays caused by overextended scenes, redundant narrative descriptions, and arbitrary chapter breaks.
End chapters strictly on a character decision, a major reveal, or a structural reversal
Execute a clean break whenever the point of view character or physical location shifts
Vary chapter lengths intentionally to establish a deliberate narrative rhythm
BeforeThe chapter continued for ten pages after the negotiation ended, detailing the characters walking back to their hotel, ordering dinner, discussing the history of the local architecture, and slowly getting ready for bed.
AfterThe moment the duke signed the writ, the chapter closed on his ink-stained fingers. The next chapter opened mid-stride on the rain-slicked docks as the characters scrambled to find a captain willing to clear the port before the writ was countermanded.
Bloated chapters drag down a novel's pacing by forcing readers to wade through overextended scene blocking, repetitive interior monologues, and self-indulgent descriptions that do not move the plot forward. This issue frequently occurs when an author ties chapter breaks to arbitrary concepts, like a calendar day ending, rather than dramatic turns.
When a single chapter houses multiple independent goals or overstays its welcome long after the primary tension has been resolved, reader fatigue sets in. In digital marketplaces, a bloated chapter structure can cause the retail sample pages to cut off awkwardly mid-beat, ruining the story's hook.
