Character craft
The main character behaves like an empty vessel who merely reactively carries out the plot outline.
The lead feels purely functional. They react to events but lack distinctive desires, fears, or a unique voice on the page.
Define a clear want versus need and test both across scenes
Assign a specific behavioral tell that surfaces under stress
Allow their fatal flaw to trigger a major, visible mistake before the midpoint
BeforeShe was brave and kind and wanted to save the village.
AfterShe volunteered first, always, because sitting still felt like abandoning her brother again.
A flat protagonist reads like an empty vessel designed solely to carry the author’s plot from scene to scene. While spectacular events might occur around them, the character themselves lacks an independent psychological interior, a distinct voice, or a compelling set of personal contradictions. This problem frequently surfaces when a writer spends all their creative energy engineering intricate plot twists or expansive world-building, leaving the main character as a passive observer who simply executes the actions required by the outline. If a protagonist has no clear internal wants, hidden fears, or fatal flaws, the reader will find it impossible to invest in their journey.
To build a three-dimensional lead, you must decouple their identity from the functional requirements of the plot. Every compelling protagonist must possess a specific internal wound or core misbelief about the world that actively distorts their decision-making process. Their want must directly clash with their underlying psychological need, creating constant internal friction. Give them clear, non-negotiable personal boundaries, distinct behavioral quirks under immense stress, and a voice that cannot be mistaken for any other character on the page.
