BeforeClara had hated the nobility her entire life, but when Lord Vane offered her a seat in his carriage, she smiled warmly, climbed inside, and immediately began telling him all her deepest secrets.
AfterClara stared at the crest on the carriage door for a full minute before touching the brass handle. Accepting Lord Vane’s offer of a ride nauseated her, but the city guard was checking identification cards at the end of the block. She climbed inside, keeping her hand locked around the knife hidden in her sleeve.
Character inconsistency occurs when a figure’s core psychological traits, moral values, or professional skills undergo wild, unearned fluctuations from chapter to chapter. A highly trained elite operative might suddenly become completely oblivious to an obvious ambush simply because the author needs them to be captured, or a ruthlessly pragmatic merchant might uncharacteristically risk their life for a stranger solely to advance a romantic subplot. These jarring shifts instantly destroy character continuity and break the reader’s trust in the internal reality of the story. They usually stem from editing scenes in complete isolation or forcing a character to behave against their established nature to satisfy a rigid plot outline. To establish unassailable character consistency, you must develop a centralized behavioral baseline for every major figure in your manuscript. Document their non-negotiable core values, their historical traumas, and their highly specific stress responses.
