Worldbuilding craft
The fundamental logic of magic, technology, or society alters arbitrarily to award the plot a shortcut.
Avoid breaking established rules of magic, technology, or societal norms simply to grant the plot a convenient shortcut.
Document hard rules, systemic limitations, and costs to share with your beta readers
When a rule must break, turn that disruption into a major plot event with severe fallout
Conduct a dedicated structural audit of travel, healing, and communication timelines
BeforeAlthough it was previously established that teleportation required a full day of fasting and intense mental focus, Sarah instantly cast the spell during the tavern brawl to escape the guards.
AfterTeleporting out of the tavern cellar cost Sarah her sight for an hour. She materialized in the muddy alleyway blindly, her hands scraping against the brick walls to find her bearings while her ears rang with the feedback loop of the ungrounded spell.
Inconsistent world-building shatters reader trust by treating the setting's rules as flexible parameters that change whenever the plot needs a quick shortcut. This occurs when the ceiling of a magic system shifts arbitrarily to rescue a cornered character, or when travel times between locations compress without explanation to force a last-minute rescue.
When an author breaks their own established world constraints without turning that disruption into a major, consequence-heavy plot event, the setting stops feeling like a tangible, living reality and begins to look like a poorly constructed stage set.
