Pacing craft
The narrative finishes abruptly in a few rapid pages, completely skipping the emotional aftermath.
The narrative resolution compresses into a few rapid pages after a long middle act, leaving the emotional aftermath thin.
Budget specific scenes for character aftermath and relationship repair
Trim middle act sprawl to earn proper finale space
Resolve B-plots prior to the climax so the finale can focus entirely on the core choice
BeforeAfter the dragon was slain, the kingdom celebrated for three days. Arthur was crowned king in a grand ceremony, and everyone lived happily ever after, finally free from the threat of darkness.
AfterThey spent three days simply clearing the stone shards from the great hall so the wounded could lie flat. When they placed the iron crown on Arthur's table, he didn't pick it up. He spent the evening tracking down the names of the missing scouts from the third vanguard, his fingers leaving dark soot-smudges across the parchment.
A rushed ending leaves readers feeling structurally cheated, compressing the massive dramatic payoff of a novel into a handful of hurried, summary-dense pages. This typically happens due to late-stage drafting fatigue or because an author expanded the final battle scene at the direct expense of the denouement.
When the emotional aftermath of a major conflict is skipped, the characters' losses and victories lose their weight. If a massive political upheaval or the death of a primary companion is resolved and dismissed within a single page before sprinting to an epilogue, the narrative arc feels incomplete and unearned.
