BeginnerStructure & pacingReference
The event that disrupts normal life and gives the story a reason to start.

The event that disrupts normal life and gives the story a reason to start. At macro scale, structure and pacing decide when readers breathe and when pressure spikes.

As a structure label, it helps you map drafts. Labels serve the story, not the other way around.

Why it matters

Inciting incident names a structural or pacing move. Use it to diagnose sag, turns, and reader energy across scenes and acts.

Common pitfalls

  • Using inciting incident as a label without checking whether the page actually performs the job.
  • Letting inciting incident crowd out scene goal, conflict, or change at the end of the unit.
Example only
The inciting incident lands when the courier realizes the seal is broken. The plan must change before dawn.
