Payoff

Also called
reveal payoff
BeginnerSuspense & revelationReference
When a planted element returns with new force, for satisfaction or reversal.

When a planted element returns with new force, for satisfaction or reversal. Suspense craft is information choreography: who knows what, and when the reader gets to care.

As a concept, it names a force readers feel even when they never use the word.

Why it matters

Payoff supports fair information design: what readers know, when, and whether the ride feels earned.

Common pitfalls

  • Using payoff as a label without checking whether the page actually performs the job.
  • Letting payoff crowd out scene goal, conflict, or change at the end of the unit.
Example only
Readers feel payoff when stakes tighten after the ally refuses to help.
