Pinch point

Also called
pinch
IntermediateStructure & pacingReference
A pressure beat that reminds readers of the antagonistic force mid-act.

A pressure beat that reminds readers of the antagonistic force mid-act. At macro scale, structure and pacing decide when readers breathe and when pressure spikes.

As a structure label, it helps you map drafts. Labels serve the story, not the other way around.

Why it matters

Pinch point names a structural or pacing move. Use it to diagnose sag, turns, and reader energy across scenes and acts.

Common pitfalls

  • Pinch points with no visible opposition.
  • Using pinch point as a label without checking whether the page actually performs the job.
  • Letting pinch point crowd out scene goal, conflict, or change at the end of the unit.
Example only
The pinch point lands when the courier realizes the seal is broken. The plan must change before dawn.
