Every clock in the house is wrong, and the narrator insists that is proof of truth.
(Demo synopsis.) The narrator returns to a childhood home to settle an estate and discovers every clock has been stopped at the same minute, the minute they insist a family tragedy occurred. Each chapter resets certain facts: a brother's presence, a doctor's diagnosis, the color of a dress in a photograph.
The plot is not a whodunit but a collapse of memory under grief. Small factual slips accumulate until the reader questions whether the narrator is reconstructing the past or inventing a cleaner culprit.
The ending withholds a single authoritative timeline, forcing the reader to sit with competing accounts. Study how chapter breaks function as memory resets rather than conventional scene changes, and how domestic detail anchors each version of the truth.
Unreliable narration succeeds when small factual slips precede large reversals. Map chapter breaks as memory resets, not mere scene changes.
A literary novel told through a narrator whose memories rearrange each chapter.
I remember the funeral perfectly. I was not there.
