A dysfunctional rural family endures a catastrophic journey across a flooded Mississippi landscape to bury their deceased matriarch in her ancestral hometown. This modern tragedy tracks how a primitive wooden coffin becomes the physical and psychological anchor for a fractured community.
When a destitute farm woman dies after a long illness, her husband and children immediately prepare a mule drawn wagon to honor her final request to be buried in Jefferson. The narrative opens with the rhythmic sound of an adze constructing the coffin beneath the dying woman's window, establishing an immediate conflict between the individual desires of the children and the father's stubborn obsession with his promise. This grueling pilgrimage sets the primary tension, matching the family's internal rivalries and secret shames against a hostile physical landscape of washed out bridges, rising waters, and intense summer heat. Every subsequent mile across the country tests the boundaries of familial obligation against the rotting reality of the corpse.
The middle chapters progress through a sequence of isolated farmhouses, flooded river crossings, and burning barns. A deeply intuitive, clairvoyant son, Darl, provides a fragmented perspective on his siblings' secret motives while attempting to destroy the offensive coffin, keeping the reader fully aligned with the growing madness of the journey. The plot accelerates when the wagon attempts to cross a raging river, losing the mules and breaking the leg of the eldest son in the rushing water. This crisis forces the family to become increasingly desperate, using makeshift concrete casts to fix injuries while ignoring the physical decay of the body under the sweltering sun. Because the author distributes the narrative across fifteen distinct viewpoints with varying levels of reliability, the audience experiences the structural tension of delayed information.
The drama concludes in the streets of Jefferson, where the father immediately commits his visionary son to an asylum before purchasing a new set of false teeth and introducing a new wife to his children. With the matriarch finally buried and the remaining family members ruined by their choices, the narrative resolves in a grim, absurd domestic reset. The entire plot takes place along the rural roads of Yoknapatawpha County, using the physical distance to the cemetery to sequence the psychological breakdown.
This novel is a masterclass in polyphonic narrative structure and stream of consciousness experimentation. The multiple first-person narrators use deeply subjective, disjointed monologues to process their grief and ambition, forcing the audience to reconstruct the actual plot mechanics from conflicting testimonies. The narrative engine relies on the physical presence of the decaying burden, tracking how a single object can expose the absolute alienation existing between family members.
Faulkner’s architecture relies on the narrow space of the wagon bed and iterative rural stops. By repeatedly placing his characters into a small, predictable cycle between the dusty road, the muddy river bank, and the isolated farmyard, he highlights their inescapable intimacy. Every polite conversation with concerned neighbors over the smell of the wagon becomes a high-stakes arena where the brothers use silent hostility and cryptic warnings to guard their private miseries without ever breaking their rural stoicism.
