Character craft
Outsized physical hysterics and emotional outbursts substitute for earned, gradual internal tension.
Characters exhibit extreme, explosive emotional reactions that far outweigh the actual narrative context or underlying stakes.
Understate the initial reaction to allow room for the character’s internal pressure to build over time
Use specific physical restraint or active denial instead of immediate outbursts to convey genuine shock
Ground the emotional escalation in a tangible betrayal of an established, long-held personal belief
Before"How could you do this!" she screamed wildly, tears streaming down her face as her heart broke into a million bleeding pieces upon reading his short note.
AfterShe sat down carefully, her fingers tracing the edge of the envelope until the paper cut her skin. She did not look up when the back door closed, nor when the carriage cleared the gravel drive.
Melodrama surfaces when characters weep, scream, or break objects over minor interpersonal slights, substituting physical histrionics for gradual, internal tension. This issue arises when an author rushes straight to an emotional breakdown before layering the prerequisite stress or establishing the specific values that would justify such a massive reaction.
When the physical expression of grief or anger far outweighs the narrative context, the reader detaches from the scene, viewing the characters' outbursts as artificial, unearned manipulation rather than authentic emotional depth.
