MacGuffin

Also called
plot device object
IntermediatePlot & story shapeReference
A goal object whose details matter less than the chase it causes.

A goal object whose details matter less than the chase it causes. Plot shape terms describe how events argue with each other: causality and pattern, not just a list of scenes.

As a device, it manipulates reader experience. Plant it early enough to feel fair on reread.

In revision, ask whether the move earns its place in this scene. Techniques work when they change reader understanding or feeling.

Why it matters

MacGuffin helps you describe story shape and causal design so beta readers and editors share your intent.

Common pitfalls

  • Using macguffin as a label without checking whether the page actually performs the job.
  • Letting macguffin crowd out scene goal, conflict, or change at the end of the unit.
Example only
A planted detail returns at payoff, and readers recognize macguffin in hindsight.
