Stakes

Also called
what's at risk
BeginnerPlot & story shapeReference
What can be won or lost if this scene or story fails: personal, relational, or public.

What can be lost if the protagonist fails. It must feel concrete to the reader. Plot shape terms describe how events argue with each other: causality and pattern, not just a list of scenes.

As a concept, it names a force readers feel even when they never use the word.

Why it matters

Stakes helps you describe story shape and causal design so beta readers and editors share your intent.

Common pitfalls

  • Using stakes as a label without checking whether the page actually performs the job.
  • Letting stakes crowd out scene goal, conflict, or change at the end of the unit.
Example only
Readers feel stakes when stakes tighten after the ally refuses to help.
