A brilliant, arrogant British phonetics professor wagers that he can transform a vulgar cockney flower girl into a duchess by reforming her speech. This drawing room comedy tracks how the academic interior of a London study becomes an institutional laboratory for exposing the artificial nature of class hierarchies.
When an eccentric scientist encounters a destitute street vendor during a London rainstorm, he records her accent as a sample of linguistic degradation. The narrative opens under the portico of Covent Garden, establishing an immediate conflict between the girl's defensive pride and the professor's clinical determination to reduce human speech to mathematical equations. This educational experiment sets the primary tension, matching the flower girl's desire for professional advancement against the professor's complete indifference to her emotional future once the wager is completed. Every subsequent lesson inside the laboratory tests her cognitive resilience against his relentless discipline.
The middle chapters progress through a sequence of intensive phonetics drills, formal tea parties, and high society balls. A gentle, wealthy military colleague, Colonel Pickering, funds the experiment and treats the student with absolute domestic respect, keeping the reader fully aligned with the household's growing tension. The plot accelerates when the flower girl successfully passes as an aristocratic lady at an ambassador's reception, returning home only to find that the professor completely ignores her contribution to his victory. This crisis forces the heroine to revolt against her master, throwing his slippers at his face before fleeing the house to seek sanctuary with his own mother. Because the author holds back the girl's final intellectual victory over her teacher until their final argument in the parlor, the audience experiences the structural tension of delayed information.
The drama concludes within a comfortable Chelsea drawing room, where an independent Eliza Doolittle rejects the professor's offer to return as a domestic companion, choosing instead to support herself by teaching phonetics to social climbers. With her speech permanently reformed but her status transformed into complete class independence, the narrative resolves in a modern rejection of the traditional romantic ending. The entire plot takes place within the strict geographical boundaries of metropolitan London, using the precise acquisition of standard pronunciation to sequence the social stand-off.
This play is a masterclass in social satire and the dramatic execution of dialect transformation. The dramatic text uses a deeply serious, analytical dialogue format to dissect the artificial barriers between social classes, forcing the audience to see how much aristocratic prestige is merely a performance of language and clothing. The narrative engine relies on complete behavioral control, tracking how a change in phonetic technique can completely dismantle a society's legal and economic definitions of identity.
Shaw’s architecture relies on fixed laboratory spaces and iterative conversational loops. By repeatedly placing his characters into a small, predictable cycle between the phonograph-lined study, the formal tea table, and the public garden, he highlights their inescapable proximity. Every polite conversation over an afternoon tea becomes a high-stakes arena where the student uses precise pronunciation and the teacher uses sharp wit to probe the limits of class identity without ever breaking decorum.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
